How to Properly Wash a Shearling Coat: Tips and Techniques

Shearling coats are a luxurious and cosy addition to any winter wardrobe. Made from the hides of sheep or lamb with the wool left on, shearling coats are soft, warm, and stylish. However, these coats require special care when it comes to cleaning to ensure that the wool stays soft and supple. Here are some tips and techniques for properly washing your shearling coat.

Check the Care Label

Before washing your shearling coat, check the care label for any specific washing instructions. Some shearling coats may be dry clean only, while others can be washed at home. If the care label says dry clean only, take your coat to a professional cleaner.

Spot Clean Any Stains

If your shearling coat has any stains, use a damp cloth to spot-clean them before washing. Avoid using any harsh chemicals or cleaners that can damage the wool. Instead, use a mild detergent or a wool cleaner specifically designed for shearling coats.

Hand Wash in Cold Water

If your shearling coat can be washed at home, fill a sink or bathtub with cold water and add a small amount of wool cleaner. Submerge your coat in the water and gently agitate it to distribute the cleaner. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the wool as this can cause matting or damage.

Rinse Thoroughly

After washing, rinse your shearling coat thoroughly with cold water to remove any soap residue. Again, avoid rubbing or squeezing the wool as this can cause damage

Remove Excess Water

To remove excess water from your shearling coat, gently squeeze or press the wool with a clean towel. Avoid twisting or wringing the coat, as this can cause damage to the wool fibres. Repeat this step with a dry towel until most of the water is removed.

Air Dry

Lay your shearling coat flat on a clean towel or drying rack to air dry. Avoid hanging the coat, as this can stretch out the wool and cause it to lose its shape. Keep the coat away from direct sunlight or heat sources, as this can damage the wool. Allow the coat to dry completely before wearing or storing.

Fluff the Wool

After your shearling coat has dried, fluff the wool with a soft-bristled brush to restore its texture and volume. Brush in the direction of the wool to avoid matting or damaging the fibres. You can also use a hair dryer on the cool setting to fluff the wool, but keep the dryer at least six inches away from the coat.

Store Properly

When not in use, store your shearling coat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Hang it on a padded hanger to maintain its shape, or lay it flat in a garment bag. Avoid folding the coat, as this can cause creases and damage to the wool. If storing for an extended period of time, consider adding a moisture-absorbing packet to the storage area to prevent mould or mildew.
